Essay: Life Skills program

Essay: Life Skills program

In 1991, the NCAA created the Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success/Life Skills program otherwise known as CHAMPS/Life Skills. For this assignment we are going to focus on student-athlete retention programs. Review the NCAA Life Skills website, at the link provided in this week’s resources, as well as reading material online concerning this program by clicking on Life Skills Publication.

Once you have done this and have a thorough understanding of how this program operates, investigate Division I, II, and III athletic department websites and look at their descriptions of the Life Skills program at their universities. If the Division II and III universities do not have a description of the Life Skills program, go to two additional Division I athletic department websites and review their Life Skills programs.

Consider the differences, if any. Upon review, think about what you believe to be the best practices for implementing this kind of program focused on life skills.

For this week’s assignment, you are required to explain how you would implement the Life Skills program into your current department or the type of program with which you aspire to work in the form of a scholarly paper.

Be sure to incorporate the findings of Richard St. John from the TEDTalks video, located under your weekly resources. State what details can be associated with the student-athletes’ success, and explain how can these details be implemented in the program in order to uphold the student-athletes’ retention. Affirm where in the student-athletes’ academic career will these details be applied.

The assignment should address the following, but is not limited to:

The culmination of ideas from this week’s readings and videos

Implementation of the content to your future position in intercollegiate athletics

The underlying facts of what your program will offer and the goals to be accomplished

Length: 5–7 pages

References: Minimum 3–5 scholarly resources.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
